Spenser Confidential (2020) – Movie Review
Sometimes a film just hits differently on the second watch. That was the case for me with Spenser Confidential. When it first released back in 2020, I tried to sit through it but found the pacing slow and couldn’t stay engaged. Fast forward a few years, I decided to give it another chance—and I’m glad I did.
Story & Action
The movie follows Spenser (Mark Wahlberg), an ex-cop recently released from prison who gets pulled into a conspiracy involving dirty cops, cover-ups, and violence. It’s a classic action-thriller setup, with Wahlberg delivering his trademark Boston grit and quick wit.
This time around, I found myself enjoying the balance of storyline and action. The pacing still takes its time to build, but when the action hits, it really lands. The fight choreography and shootouts give you that familiar Wahlberg energy—raw, no-nonsense, and always a little reckless.
Cast & Performances
Mark Wahlberg as Spenser
Winston Duke as Hawk (and no, he wasn’t in Bullet Train, but you may recognize him from The Fall Guy and Black Panther)
Alan Arkin as Henry Cimoli
Iliza Shlesinger as Cissy
Bokeem Woodbine as Driscoll
Marc Maron as Wayne Cosgrove
Winston Duke especially stood out—he brought a strong but grounded presence to Hawk, and his chemistry with Wahlberg kept the film fun to watch.
Final Thoughts
Spenser Confidential* is far from perfect. The plot is somewhat predictable, leaning on familiar “corrupt cop” beats, and there are moments where it feels like the film plays things too safe. But as a straightforward action film with solid performances, it delivers.
My Rating: 6.5/10
If you’re in the mood for something easy to watch with some solid action and Wahlberg charm, this is a decent pick.
